Call of Duty fans can soon add a remote control recon vehicle alongside their night vision goggles.

Activision and studio Treyarch unveiled the first details on collectors editions for the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The highlight of the game's Prestige Edition, which will be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is a collectible RC-XD surveillance vehicle. "With a range of up to 200 feet, the RC-XD Surveillance Vehicle has a fully-functioning remote camera that transmits both TFT color video and audio to its operator," reads a statement from Activision.

It also includes a Hardened Edition of Black Ops, which features a limited edition medal, avatar outfit and four playable cooperative maps. The Hardened Edition will also be sold separately.

Both collectors editions, along with standard copies of Black Ops, will debut November 9.

Activision has not disclosed details on price. For the release of last November's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the Prestige Edition cost $149, while the Hardened Edition sold for $80.

A few weeks ago, a very high level meeting occurred at Treyarch where the topic of PC support arose. My sources indicate that key figures in that meeting stood up and defended the wants and desires of the hardcore PC community. Those figures were Treyarch's Community Manager and former CoD-blogger and modder, JD_2020 (Josh) and lead PC developer, pcdev (Cesar).

The rumor was that JD and pcdev won the day. Though the exact topics of the meeting were not revealed, some of us in the community were told "not to worry".

When I'm told not to worry, of course I immediately begin to worry.

What happened during that meeting?
What could have happened if Josh and Cesar were not there to boost the PC platform?

Difficult to answer these questions directly, but after the news from Gamescom today, I am only now beginning to realize what might have been at stake during that session.

But let's get to the big news. Simply put:

1. The PC platform will get a developer console in CoD:Black Ops. That is, you will be able to adjust some variables (Cvars) directly through your keyboard, whilst in-game. This has been possible on all PC-CoD's, with the exception of MW2.

2. Mod-tools, which are used to create new community maps, are not ready for deployment day one of release. However, the developers will be addressing them afterwards (presumably in the new year). The release of mod-tools has been made difficult due to changes in the CoD engine.

This info came to light in a conversation by a German forum group with Josh during today's Gamescom interviews. A translation of which appears here.

It was all confirmed on callofduty.com a little later:

We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch. We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game. There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game.

And, dev console: confirmed.

Bottom line

Configs...scripts...in-game binds...yup, looks like we still have that ability.

Mods? I cannot see why not, even on release. Mod-tools are generally necessary for community mappers, whereas modders can make due with even simple Wordpad as their "tool". Therefore, mods should be do-able.

A good day for the PC

Ironically, I had asked the "console" question to Cesar only a day earlier. He did not deny it's existence and that sometimes means its confirmation in pre-launch dev-speak.

All this is obviously great news for the community.

Interestingly, some are right now thinking that we have hit a tipping point. Maybe, we are now forever assured of getting dev consoles and mod tools (and lean...and prone...etc.) for the rest of time?

I don't think we should think that this decision was anything like a slam-dunk for Treyarch. It was undoubtedly earned through some courageous direction from PC-boosters like pcdev and JD_2020. These two deserve much of our appreciation as of course does Treyarch as a whole, for providing us a home for our hobby.

Having said that...what if pc-dev wasn't around? What if JD_2020 wasn't at that meeting to shout down the forces of consolization? What if Rob Bowling (XBox booster and not much of a PC-enthusiast) was?

I shudder to think.

But I'll worry about all this tomorrow. Today...we celebrate!

PC Call of Duty gamers were on pins and needles tonite waiting for news on Treyarch’s CoD: Black Ops Multiplayer. A good deal of MP information came out tonight at a big "do" in downtown Los Angeles, where community movers and shakers gathered to look at the online version of the new CoD franchise.

Feeding us the information, straight from the event was planetcallofduty.com’s Josh Peckler. Josh hob-nobbed with PC lead, Cesar Stastny (pcdev) and gained first-hand information.

To help us carve up that info, is New Zealand’s great shoutcaster and competitive PC caster from on3network.co.nz: Craig, aka Arseynimz.

What did we learn? Dedicated servers, sure. But you will only get them from Gameservers.com. Also, there will not be any public server files. Public files would allow you to run the game from your own server, you will have to rent them from Gameservers exclusively it seems. But ranked or unranked servers will be available from this (trusted GSP) provider. In other words, you as the admin will have access to your server and you will be able to configure the server or mod it.

The game will be distributed exclusively through Steam and that means VAC - not Punk Buster. VAC does not have the same anti-cheat savvy that PB has, so we will need to monitor the resilience of VAC to counter the hackers out there.

Josh Peckler liked the game (he only was able to play on an XBox) and seemed really stoked to get the game this coming fall.

This week we look at a touchy subject.

We argue the fact that some believe that Treyarch’s CoD: Black Ops for PC, while nowhere near as restrictive as IW’s Modern Warfare 2, is removing some of the freedoms that the PC community had once enjoyed. The argument highlights the fact that dedicated servers will only be available through Gameservers, it questions the fact that Mod Tools are still in question and the game itself will be a Steam exclusive. These issues have elicited howls of protest from the modding and admin sub-communities who see their way of life changing. Most PC gamers on the other hand do not see what the big deal is and are upset at all the negativity. Negativity chases away players and without players, clans die — goes the counter argument.

Call of Duty actually has 2 hidden games. Go to the single player menu, press SPACE and he will get out of the chair. Walk around to the back of the room, there is a computer. At this computer, you can play 2 games. A text based adventure game, by typing in ZORK. Or a top down zombie shooter by typing in DOA.

Managing your server - You can make changes to your server via the rcon tool that comes with the game. This can be found in Steam, click "Library" then "Tools" and you can download the utility

Finding your server - You can find and favorite your server in the client browser by searching for the server name. There is no direct connect function. Please note: Due to the large number of worldwide servers online, the client limits the amount of servers you browse currently. A patch will be released in the next 24-48 hours to fix this issue.

Server crashes, configuration information, lag spikes, news about patches, and other questions: We are in constant communication with developers to resolve all reported issues.

Hey guys, just want to do a quick review on black ops, I have to say its pretty good, game play is pretty fast, the maps are very detailed actually they are quite beautiful. Server browser is really good, the game play is just what you think a cod game should be, its half way between world at war and cod4, It is save to buy this game.

The hit rego is up and down losing a massive 5-6 packets and fps wont go above 60 no matter what I set it at or settings I run. Lastly I can never get on the MB's server as it is always fill :(

i think you are abit premature, they have only released 2 lilttle patches, if you think of cod4 it took 7 patches to get it fixed, when you look at bc2 they must be up to almost 6 or 7 patches and they are still trying to tweek the weapons. If its still not right after 7 patches then you can complain
